Creating Knockout Opportunities: Creating Ambitious Futures Through Sport and Education

Last Friday, Place Partnership welcomed Mr Jake Richards MP to Maltby Academy to discuss how education, sport and community partnerships can work together to create meaningful opportunities for young people.

At the centre of the conversation was the launch of The Sixth Form Partnership Boxing Scholarship, delivered in partnership with DC Boxing. The scholarship forms part of The Sixth Form Partnership, a collaborative sixth form between Maltby Academy and Sir Thomas Wharton Academy, offering students across both schools access to an ambitious range of academic, vocational and enrichment opportunities. The new scholarship combines educational excellence with elite sporting development, enabling students to pursue their passion for boxing while remaining focused on their academic aspirations.

The visit provided an opportunity to explore how innovative partnerships can help young people develop the skills, confidence and resilience needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom. The scholarship is built on the belief that students should never have to choose between education and sport. Instead, they should be supported to excel in both.

Discussions also focused on the important role that sport can play in strengthening communities. Coaches often become trusted mentors, helping young people develop discipline, motivation and self-belief while providing positive role models who understand the communities they serve. By creating more opportunities locally, programmes like the Boxing Scholarship can help nurture talent and keep it within the region.

For The Sixth Form Partnership and the Trust, the Boxing Scholarship is more than just a sporting programme. It is a reflection of our vision that People Belong, Place Matters and Purpose Lasts.

People Belong

By creating a supportive network of students, coaches, schools and families working towards shared success.

Place Matters

By investing in opportunities that strengthen local communities and help young people thrive close to home.

Purpose Lasts

By ensuring students develop the qualifications, character and life skills that will benefit them long after their time in education.

The Sixth Form Partnership Boxing Scholarship demonstrates what can be achieved when education, sport and community partners come together around a shared ambition, helping every young person unlock their full potential.

As The Sixth Form Partnership continues to grow, so too does our commitment to ensuring every young person has access to opportunities that help them thrive and succeed.
